After a strong performance in the team time trial yesterday, Development Team Sunweb lined up at the second stage of Ronde van Midden Nederland today for another impressive show.
The second stage featured a 200 kilometre classic road stage starting and finishing in Utrecht. Despite various attempts, the peloton remained compact for the majority of the race. After 120 kilometres a group of four managed to snap the elastic, taking a 1 minute and 30 second lead. Development Team Sunweb remained tucked inside the peloton working to protect Max Kanter and line him up for the sprint.
The leading quartet remained out front until 5 kilometres to go when the bunch became complete in preparation for the bunch kick to the line. A superb lead-out from his team mates saw U23 German road race champion Max Kanter open out his sprint in prime position to finish the day in 3rd place.
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers said: “Despite two crashes which meant that Ruben and Florian had to abandon the race, it was a really good day for the team. There was a really big chance for a bunch sprint today and in the final kilometres, Martin and Maxime took the lead in preparing for this outcome. With Max our sprinter for the day, he had a strong team around him to lead him out for the finish. We had Nils and Jarno there with him into the last kilometre and Max was able to start his sprint in a really good way. He was leading with just a few hundred metres to go but two guys jumped in front of him. He finished in third place. It was a really great job from the entire team today.”
