In the one day race Rund um Köln, Development Team Sunweb rider Max Kanter battled it out in a sprint finish, whilst Florian Stork fought strong in a breakaway.
The 207.7km long one day race Rund um Köln saw an animated start to the race with a seven man breakaway going off the front, which included Development Team Sunweb’s Florian Stork. There lead hit a peak of four minutes and looked like it had the potential to stay away at one point. However, the peloton soon ramped up the pace and the breakaway were caught with 60km left to go.
As the race moved into the final 20km it was setting up to be a sprint finish with all teams fighting it out for the best positions. Development Team Sunweb’s Max Kanter set himself up well initially, but was soon boxed out and crossed the line in 17th position.
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers had to say: “This was a good race for us. It started with a breakaway with Florian in it, which was great. The rest of the guys could just sit in the peloton because of this which made things easier. Once Team Bora and Katusha picked up the pace and Florian was caught, the day became about getting Max the win. Max did a very good job but managed to block himself out in the last 1km, so he could not get out the front to fight it out at the very front of the race which is a shame, but it is an improvement point for next time.”
