ABOUT Wilco Kelderman

Wilco started cycling at an early age. The Dutch rider won many stages and multi-day races at Juniors and U23 level. His professional cycling career started in 2012 for Team Lotto-Jumbo and he immediately performed well as a pro. Time trial, climbing and sprinting: he can do it all. At 25 years old he has already recorded top results at the highest level including; a GC win at the Tour of Denmark, various top ten results at the Giro, the Criterium Dauphine and the Tour de Romandie. In 2015 he also became the Dutch Time Trial Champion.

The talented rider is very happy to make the transfer to Team Sunweb. “It will be refreshing to work in a new environment, with new teammates and new staff. It will be good to be part of a team with a different view on cycling. The team will allow me to grow towards a role as a leader for the Grand Tours, using a gradual approach. With an emphasis on science and technology, they are successful with their philosophy. It will be like a new start which makes me open-minded and very motivated again. This is what I need to become a better rider.”

At first glance he has a quiet personality and is an inconspicuous and modest guy. But don’t underestimate him: Kelderman is a silent force with an enormous power. And there’s still a large margin to keep growing. He’s an important rider for the general classifications in the one-week WorldTour stage races. He also has all the qualities needed to ride the Grand Tours with his strong time trial and climbing skills.

The Giro is his favourite race and he’s very glad he will ride the 100th version this year. “I love the Giro as it has good ambiance and beautiful climbs. It’s less hectic than the Tour de France. I’m really looking to taking part of it with my new team.” Whilst discussing his role in his new team Wilco says: “There are a lot of good riders in this team. I will ride for the team. And if I get my chance, I’ll certainly go for it.”
