ABOUT Martijn Tusveld

When he was younger, Martijn Tusveld’s parents took him along with them on cycling-holidays. Although he didn’t like it much, the trips inspired him and at the age of 13 he raced competitively for the first time. “In recent years, I discovered that my strengths are in climbing and in the time trials. I really enjoy climbing, it pushes me to find my limits.”

24-year-old Tusveld is one of five new riders in Team Sunweb’s men’s program this year. Before signing a contract with Team Sunweb, Martijn Tusveld was a trainee at the team during the second half of the 2016 season. “I immediately had a good feeling about the team and how they work, and I’m pleased to be able to ride on a WorldTour level now. I am thankful to Team Roompot for their good support last season. Because of that I was able to make the next step in my development.”

In previous years the Dutchman has showed his talent for riding stage races, and took some nice results in the Abu Dhabi Tour, Tour of Austria and Tour de Suisse. “Riding the Tour de Suisse in 2017 was my first WorldTour race. I finished 22nd in the general classification; confirmation that I was able to compete on the highest level.”

Tusveld dreams of riding a Grand Tour. First, he wants to ride as a helper but has ambitions to ride in the GC himself in the future. Cycling is important to him, but he has more interests. “I don’t want to spend every minute of the day thinking about cycling. To keep a fresh state of mind, I always do things next to cycling. I’m interested in politics, follow the news and want to know backgrounds of all the places I visit in the world.”
