ABOUT Johannes Fröhlinger

Johannes Fröhlinger enjoys all sports and is a real outdoorsman, with a real love for the mountains. He loves hiking, climbing and skiing and dreams of climbing above 8,000 meters. Last year he organised a bike race in a South African town. “I learnt that cycling can be a great tool to bring people together and break barriers.”

In 1999 together with his father, Johannes saw cyclists on the Col du Galibier, this was his inspiration to become a cyclist. Five years later Johannes Fröhlinger turned professional and being a Gerolsteiner himself, he is still proud of getting a pro contract with Team Gerolsteiner.

The German has been with the team since 2011 and together with riders like Bert de Backer and Albert Timmer, he is one of the teams well respected captains. He is reliable, responsible, respectful and is always clever in a race – all of the characteristics of a great cyclist.

“I don’t have many individual results. Most of the time I’m in a supporting role. In 2007 I was close to a major victory, after finishing third at the Andorra stage of the Tour de France. Being a road captain at this team is very important to me. Winning a stage has always been a dream but I enjoy other things as well, like our excellent team performance this year in the Tour of Hainan when Max Wahlscheid won five stages and the general classification. We had so much fun together and it gave us a lot of confidence for next year.”

Fröhlinger will ride almost the same program as last year, starting with the Tour Down Under in January. This will be followed by the Tour of Catalonia and the Tour of Romandie and later in the year he hopes to participate his 8th Vuelta. “The Vuelta is definitely my favourite race, the climate suits me well. It’s the most quiet and hectic of the three Grand Tours and I love the scenery.”
