ABOUT Ellen van Dijk

Inspired by her two older brothers, Ellen van Dijk spent many years combining both cycling and speed skating. At 20 years old she decided to focus on cycling and soon became a pro. During her professional cycling career, van Dijk also studied a degree in Human Movement Sciences. Driven by her personal motto ‘dream, fight, enjoy’, Ellen loves traveling and hiking, preferably with her backpack.

Van Dijk excels in tough one-day races, classics and stage races and is also one of the world’s best time trial riders. The list of successes this Dutch powerhouse holds are impressive, with more than 30 professional wins throughout her career, she last year finished fourth in the UCI-ranking. Over the years van Dijk has won several gold, silver and bronze medals on various national, European and world championships. Her most notable performances are wins in the Tour of Flanders and GC wins at the Tour of Qatar and three times at the Healthy Aging Tour.

Last year, Ellen was part of the team that won the team time trial during the world championships in Bergen. “You can really feel it when everything runs smoothly in a team time trial; there’s a huge synergy between all the riders and their bikes. In Bergen, we had a perfect flow and were able to ride gracefully and really hard.” Despite all these successes, Ellen is still hungry for more. “I would like to win a second world individual time trial title, an Olympic medal and I’ve also set my sights on the cycling world hour record.”

Besides winning races, Ellen is always willing to help her teammates. Last year this was best demonstrated at the Tour of Flanders, where Ellen helped to pull back the four leaders just a few kilometres before the finish line. Due to this incredible effort, teammate Coryn Rivera was able to win a fierce sprint to the line. “I have always enjoyed working for teammates, especially when they are in a better position to win. I’m always satisfied when I have given the best I have. On the other hand, if I fail to reach a target or goal, it always takes me some time to overcome.”

As Ellen speaks well of her team mates, they do the same for her. “She’s so unbelievably strong and you certainly don’t want to race against her; she’s like a machine.”
