ABOUT Ellen van Dijk

With the addition of Ellen van Dijk, Team Sunweb will certainly be one of the best teams in the Women’s World Tour. This 29 year old cycling star is strong in tough one-day races, classics and stage races. She is also one of the world’s best time trial riders.

Van Dijk also is also talented in another popular Dutch sport, speed skating. Her two older brothers are her inspiration for this. Cycling was essential training during summer times, to stay fit for the new skating season. Soon she rode cycling races as well and started winning them. She combined both sports on a high level for a long time but at 20 years old she decided to focus on cycling and she became a pro. During her professional cycling career, this persistent Dutch rider has also studied a degree in Human Movement Sciences.

The list of successes is impressive with several gold, silver and bronze medals on various National, European and World Championships across different age groups. As a professional, she has so far collected 28 professional victories. Her most notable performances are wins in the Tour of Flanders, a time trial victory at the Giro Rosa and overall victories in the Tour of Qatar, Energiewacht Tour (twice) and the Holland Ladies Tour. Ellen van Dijk proved her high class last year, with a fourth place at the Olympic time trial in Rio and a second place in the time trial at the World Championships in Doha. “So far, I’m most proud of my victory at the World Championships Individual Time Trial in Florence in 2013. But I still have a wish list! I would like to win a second World Championship TT, an Olympic medal and the hour record.”

Van Dijk lives by her personal motto ‘Dream, fight, enjoy’. Despite all successes, her hunger for success is still not fulfilled. “I am very excited about my move to Team Sunweb”, Van Dijk says. “It’s the opportunity I was looking for. I want to contribute to the growth of the team and develop myself accordingly. The team is attractive in its professional way of working and solid structure. We will have a great mix of talent and experienced riders. I am proud to join it.”

“I love to ride the spring classics. During these races I will have a more leading role within the team. The races I’m especially looking forward to are the World Championships in Norway and of course the Tour of Flanders. To win Flanders you need to be strong and versatile. The cobble stones, steep climbs, hectic environment and history make this race so legendary.”
