ABOUT Bert de Backer

“When you do an easy ride with a coffee stop on sunny days, you realize you have the best job in the world.” Bert de Backer has a love for his bike that will be everlasting. Cycling is not only his job but also his hobby and even on a free weekend he picks up his bike for a trip around his favourite place, Gent. It’s his way of relaxing with friends and feeling free.

The Belgian started his cycling career relatively late, since he first wanted to finish his studies in Gymnastics. Since 2009, de Backer has been wearing the teams colours. This 32 year olds speciality are the technical spring races, which most of the time he rides as team captain. He also plays an important role in the lead-out of the sprinters.

One of his highlights of last season was the Tour of Hainan. Due to a great team effort, Max Wahlscheid won five stages and the green jersey. “The lead-out train was brilliant, just like in the past with Marcel Kittel. We acted like we were 18 years old and had a blast. It was wonderful that we could close a tumultuous season with such a positive feeling”.

During almost every race De Backer assists the team leaders on their mission for good results. There’s just one exception, Paris-Roubaix. This race is Bert’s ultimate favourite. With seven entries in eight years, De Backer is a regular visitor to the Hell of the North. During the last three years he has continually excelled in this classic, with an 11th, 12th and 17th place. “Paris-Roubaix is my dream race. I always perform well, even better than all other races. Why? I think I can ride the cobblestones very efficiently and I like racing that time of the year. I have an extreme focus on that race, it makes me mentally stronger. I never like to overrate myself, but I do believe I can win this race.”

"My inspiration to keep challenging myself is based on my passion for cycling."
