Team Sunweb’s Nikias Arndt finished in 4th place ahead of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race on Saturday, where he starts to defend his title.
The action in Australia continued today with Towards Zero Race Melbourne, at Albert Park Formula 1 Circuit. Tasked with 22 laps around a 5.3 kilometre circuit, the race totalled 116.6 kilometres. Attacks flew straight from the start, with Team Sunweb’s Chad Haga being involved in the day’s main breakaway. The seven riders broke clear on the fourth lap, staying clear until the final time around the circuit. As the break dropped back to the bunch the race was well and truly on in the peloton. Lining Nikias Arndt out for the sprint, Team Sunweb set him in position to take 4th place.
After the race Nikias said: “It was a nice criterium today in Melbourne. The team did a good job and from the beginning were alert. It was good to have Chad in the break so that we were safe if they were to stay away. In the race we stayed together, everyone was motivated to achieve the goal. The team did a good lead out which made sure I was really relaxed coming into the last kilometre so I could go for the sprint. I ended up 3rd which I’m happy with after good team work.”
