It was another good day out for Georg Preidler as he spent day two in the break on the Queen’s stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia whilst wearing the mountains jersey. After around 40km of racing the break of Preidler and four riders went clear; they went on to gain a peak advantage of 8 minutes. As the race approached the final 50km, attacks came from within the break and two riders broke away. Two then turned to one and gradually all but one of the breakaway riders were absorbed by the chasing peloton, including Team Sunweb’s Preidler. The race came back together in the final 10km of the race and Warren Barguil made a move on the final climb. The peloton were keen to not let him go and he was quickly reeled back in going on to finish in 15th place, with Sam Oomen just 5 riders behind him in 20th position. Preidler’s efforts in the breakaway has also put him further into the lead in the mountains classification.
Team coach Aike Visbeek said: “The days plan was for Georg to get in the break again and I am really pleased he managed to do that. Georg was also able to take more points in the mountains classification and it’s great that he was able to achieve that to put him further ahead in contention. The second goal was to position Warren well in the final which we also did well. It was a great team effort from everyone today and I’m pleased that the team is riding at such a good level.”
