Team Sunweb’s Sam Oomen took a hard fought 4th in the final stage 7 of the Tour of Poland to finish 10th in the overall GC.
The final 136km stage 7 at the Tour of Poland started from Bukovina Resort and finished in Bukowina Tatrzanska. It was a tough day for the riders which included 3 categorised climbs. Team Sunweb’s Johannes Fröhlinger spent much of the day in a breakaway, which was eventually caught.
Team Sunweb’s Sam Oomen had been waiting patiently in the peloton for much of the race. In the final 20km the race had all come back together. A mini-break broke clear with 10km remaining and Sam Oomen took his opportunity to go with the front of the race. In the closing stages of the race with one rider up the road Sam Oomen was fighting for a top 5 and a good GC position. Over the final 1km Sam positioned himself well to sprint to a solid 4th in tough conditions and finish 10th in the overall GC.
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert said: “It was a hard day again but also a good day for us. We had Johannes in the breakaway. Once caught he was still able to help out Sam for the final stages. The last 30km the race exploded and Sam was there with the best and produced a really strong race. One rider escaped in the end. Sam finished 4th on the stage and 10th overall in the GC which is a good result.”
