Team Sunweb’s Sam Oomen finishes the fifth stage in Poland to retain his 7th in the GC.
It took a while for the breakaway to form on stage five, with 50 kilometres of racing covered before a seven man group went clear. As the peloton approached the three finishing circuits of Bielsko-Biala, they had the remnants of the group just within reach and with two laps to go the peloton regrouped.
Sam Oomen remained towards the front of the peloton in good position heading towards the final two kilometre haul to the line. The bunch remained compact to contest the final as a group, with Sam finishing stage five on the same time as the stage winner, therefore with no changes to his GC position. He remains 7th overall at 27 seconds.
Sam said: “Today was about staying out of trouble and not losing time on a tricky final. At the end I feel a bit disappointed about my sprint – I think I could have done better with some more confidence. Although we’re only with four guys now I’m happy with how the boys took care of me today.”
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert said: “Today’s stage was up and down throughout. The goal was to protect Sam during the day and keep him safe in the final. The team did a good job and Sam finished within the first group. We are now looking forward to the next two hard stages in the area of Zakopane, where a lot in the GC can still happen.”
