Team Sunweb’s Sam Oomen has finished in 7th place at the fourth stage of the Tour of Poland today, the race’s first uphill finale.
The early parts of the stage were animated by a three man breakaway, who in the first 20 kilometres of racing opened up just under a six minute advantage over the peloton. The remnants of the group were brought back inside the final 12 kilometres, with a reduced bunch making the catch and immediately ramping up the pace.
The race stayed together for the pack to climb to the line, with Sam Oomen there for Team Sunweb. A late solo attacker was brought back with 400 metres to go and it came down to a group uphill kick to contest the stage honours. With team mate Michael Storer unable to assist in the final due to a flat tyre in the final five kilometres, Sam put in a strong ride to 7th and now moves to 7th overall.
*Still recovering from sickness, Phil Bauhaus abandoned during the race. Mike Teunissen was involved in a crash on a descent, and also abandons the race. More info here regarding Mike’s injuries.
Sam said: “It was a hard final climb where I started too far back, but the result was alright considering that. Right now I just feel quite rubbish that Mike crashed quite hard and also Phil wasn’t feeling well. We will make the best out of it from here but right now I mainly hope Mike is ok.”
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert added: “Today the character of the race changed and after 3 flat stages we went into the mountains. It was again a hot day with temperatures more than 30 degrees and the riders did well in protecting Sam. As Michael had a flat tyre with five kilometres to go Sam went alone into the last Muur and did a strong final finishing 7th.
During the day we lost Phil who was fighting after a sickness already during the first stages and Mike who did a great race today before his crash.”
