As the race came down to a bunch sprint in Zabrze, Team Sunweb’s Mike Teunissen rounded out the top 10, with Sam Oomen finishing the day safely with no time losses.
The third stage in Poland saw a four man break go clear in the opening 20 kilometres, eventually being absorbed by the peloton with nine to go. As the main field came together for a bunch sprint, Team Sunweb brought Sam Oomen to safety whilst the sprinters teams began their battle for positioning at the head of affairs. Johannes Fröhlinger was the man to set up the sprint for Mike Teunissen, bringing him up through the bunch to open out his fast kick to the line. Sam finished the day safely ahead of a day in the mountains tomorrow, with Mike sprinting to 10th place on the stage.
Mike said: “I’m a bit disappointed I could not do my sprint properly. I was boxed in and had to brake, so 10th was the best that I could do today.”
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “Today was another nervous sprint finish. Phil still isn’t feeling good so we changed plan to go for the sprint with Mike again. Unfortunately he was boxed in and could not do his sprint. We’re happy that Sam was sharp and again in the top 20. Tomorrow we will hit the more difficult stages and that is something the guys are looking forward to.”
