Mike Teunissen was once again in the mix in the sprint finish to stage 2 of the Tour of Poland, taking 8th today. It’s his second top 10 of the race, and came in a very hectic bunch finish.
Mike was well positioned coming into the fast run in to the line, but with riders drag racing all over the road it was a difficult finish to find the correct line with the final effort. Regardless, it was a strong result against some of the fastest sprinters in the peloton.
The day got underway with a four-man breakaway going clear and setting out to spend much of the day in front. The peloton kept the breakaway well under control throughout the stage, with Team Sunweb assisting on the chasing on the front to gradually reel in the escape. With the catch eventually coming with just over 10km to race, there was still time for late attacks which set up a chaotic sprint finish.
After the race, Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “It was another chaotic final today again. We wanted the team in a good position for the final laps to save some energy, and this worked well. Because there’s still some sickness and minor issues we could not have all the guys in position for the lead-out. But it was good to see Mike could claim another top 10 spot, and Sam also finished in front of most of the GC riders again.”
Mike himself added: “It was a dangerous sprint and I could not get the gap I needed. I feel good but I hope Phil feels better tomorrow as I think he has good chances for the sprints here.”
