As the race concluded with a bunch sprint for the opening stage, Team Sunweb’s Mike Teunissen finished the day in a solid 6th place.
The Tour of Poland opened with a short 130 kilometre sprint stage today, with a four rider group attacking from the gun to form the day’s breakaway. The quartet remained up the road until five kilometres to go, when the last rider was brought back in time for the expected bunch kick to the line.
After bringing Sam Oomen to safety, Team Sunweb’s Mike Teunissen sprinted to a solid 6th place on the stage.
Mike said: “Phil wasn’t feeling good today so we went for plan B with me. The guys helped me as best they could to bring me into position and in the end I was 6th. I don’t have the real top speed like the big guys but if I’m well positioned I can do quite well so I’m happy with how today went. We will see how tomorrow goes – hopefully Phil is feeling better again.”
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “The plan today was to go for Phil in the sprint, but he wasn’t feeling good so we switched the focus to Mike. We tried to bring him into position for the final but it was a really chaotic and fast sprint. This is a good result for him and shows that he is in good shape at the moment. Our main goal here is Sam and he survived the day in a good way.”
