Development Team Sunweb lined up at the Piccolo Giro di Lombardia today for its 175 kilometre route around Oggiono. It was a fast and furious start to proceedings with Team Sunweb up at the front covering the attacks.
It was 55 kilometres before a group established a solid lead on the pack, with a group of nine eventually snapping the elastic to extend their lead out to just under three minutes. The gruelling climb of Madonna del Ghisallo saw the breakaway shatter and a reshuffling at the front of the race. Development Team Sunweb’s Florian Stork managed to maintain a solid position inside the 23-rider chase group that formed after the Madonna del Ghisallo, but despite the group’s best efforts the leading trio went on to contest the victory.
After the race Florian Stork said: “Today the race was on from the first kilometre and a lot of groups tried to go clear. We had Maxime, Max and Felix there to cover the moves for the team. After the legendary Madonna del Ghisallo the race came down to its final with two more climbs still to come. Max positioned me well going into the second-to-last climb. It was really steep but I feel that I managed to survive it quiet well staying with the best riders. On the last climb I unfortunately lost contact with the chase group while the break took the win. This was one of the hardest races that I have done so far but also one of the most beautiful.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers added: “Today was a super fast, hard race for our Devleopment Program. The selection was made on the Madonna de Ghisallo and after being positioned well by Max, Florian could follow the best. The team did a great job supporting our goal with Florian finishing the day just outside of the top 20.”
