Team Sunweb lined up for their first road race of the season at People’s Choice Classic today, with Phil Bauhaus opening the season with a solid 13th place.
A 50.1 kilometre criterium broken down into 22 laps, People’s Choice Classic took place through the centre of Adelaide, Australia. As soon as the flag dropped, the action was a-go. Five riders immediately clipped free from the peloton, with another two later bridging across to join them at the head of the race. Whilst the breakaway gained an advantage which hovered between 30-40 seconds, Team Sunweb remained tucked in the safety of the bunch. On the 18th lap the race came back together and Team Sunweb took the reigns at the front of the race. The day came down to a bunch sprint, where Phil Bauhaus managed to stay clear of trouble sprinting to 13th place.
After the race Phil said: “Today was perfect team work, we did everything like we had discussed in the meeting which was great. The final lead out was also good, Nikias and Mike brought me into a good position to open out my sprint. I was on Sagan’s wheel and the hectic-ness of the sprint caused me to lose control a little bit so I ended up just rolling over the line.”
Luke Roberts, Team Sunweb’s coach for the race added: “Tonight was all about learning to ride together in the first race of the season. The boys did a pretty good job, it was high speed throughout the whole race and stuck together well. When they wanted to make their move to the front they could do it and set up our lead out train for Phil to be in a good position. Phil didn’t get a clear run in the sprint and the result wasn’t what we had hoped for but we still have plenty of time here in Australia to try again.”
