Stage 6 of Paris-Nice took riders through a 193.5km route between Aubagne and Fayence. The beginning of the race saw a flurry of breakaway attempts but nothing was to stick until 60km of racing had been covered. The group of 8 stayed away for the majority of the race, but were to fall apart as the race reached the Côte du Mont Méaulx. As the breakaway came back to the peloton the bunch split. Warren Barguil and Sam Oomen were well placed inside the first group. A solo attack came from the front of the bunch and although many tried, no rider was able to follow. Warren finished the day in 13th place and moved up to 10th place in the GC. Sam Oomen also crossed the line close behind in 15th place.
“Today was a hard day for the team,” explained Warren after the finish. “Although it was tough we were strong and I had five guys still around me with 25km to go. It was a really good ride from the team and Sam helped me on the last climb. I got cramp and lost a little bit of time in the last kilometre but I am happy and my legs are improving every day. It was also nice to have a warmer stage than those earlier on in the week, we are finally heading towards the sun!”
Team Sunweb coach Morten Bennekou said: “Today we saw a really strong performance from the team which we can all be proud of. With five riders going into the final of the race we still had enough riders there to support Warren. In the last kilometres a small group of riders saw themselves at the front of the bunch, chasing a solo attack. Sam was up there with Warren in that group supporting him until the end. Warren finished in 13th place after suffering a bout of cramp. He has now moved up to a stable 10th place in the GC which we are pleased with.”
