A day of breakaways for Development Team Sunweb at Tour de Savoie Mont-Blanc

A short 123 kilometre route from Magland to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne was on the cards for Development Team Sunweb at stage three today, with three categorised climbs to contend with along the way.

It was a furious start to race with a variety of attacks to open the race. A strong ride from Felix Gall meant he was involved in an early attempt with 10 riders, but the break was brought back. As more attacks tried their luck, Development Team Sunweb were there with Ruben Zepuntke in a group of 15 riders. More attacks from within this group saw a nine riders go clear, a move that Ruben could not follow. It was a day for a final breakaway attempt to prevail and the winner came from the front group. Development Team Sunweb finished the day safe inside the bunch, ready to test their legs once again in the individual time trial later today.

After the stage Ruben said: “Today was a difficult stage, I managed to bridge the gap towards a break that we had initially missed. When attacks came from that group I didn’t have the legs to follow anymore and went back to the team in the bunch. It was a tough day but we gave it our all to try to be there on the important moments.”

Team Sunweb coach Dirk Reuling said: “It was a hard day today with climbing straight from the start. A group went clear with Felix but unfortunately this didn’t stick. Ruben then went forward with another break but when attacks came from the group he couldn’t follow. The team did a great job to finish inside the bunch today and we’re looking forward to the time trial this evening.”

Individual Time Trial Reactions

“Today Marc did a decent time trial and paced the climb really well. He caught two riders in front of him and took a good top 20 with a time of 2’41”. Felix was also strong in his first year finishing 3’38”.
