The first stage of the Tour Savoie Mont Blanc opened today with a 139 kilometre stage from La Léchère to Aussois with two categorised climbs to contend with along the way. After 14 kilometres a breakaway of five went clear with Ruben Zepuntke representing the team up the road. Felix Gall joined a chasing group to jump across to Ruben and co. The day’s tough terrain meant that the formation of the race splintered and the breakaway was brought back. The uphill finish did some damage to the peloton, with only a few riders able to go forward ahead.
After the stage Marc said: “Today I was feeling good uphill and especially on the Iseran I had good legs. Unfortunately there were a lot of attacks on the descents and I couldn’t cover them all. I feel like our performance was good together and I’m looking forward to seeing what the coming days bring.”
Team Sunweb coach Dirk Reuling said: “Today we had Ruben and Felix in an early break towards the beginning of the race, but were unfortunately caught on Iseran. Marc was able to stay with the best riders as the selections went forward. Florian did a good job during the stage but when a gap opened on the top he wasn’t able to close it. Marc came back to the car for bidons just as the attacks came which meant he couldn’t follow. He finished the day 3 minutes down.”
