Development Team Sunweb’s Marc Hirschi took 5th place at the Under 21 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège today, as the day’s breakaway narrowly made it to the line to contest the victory.
The day opened with a variety of attacks, but no group was given any freedom until 70 kilometres had been covered. Then, it was a 14-rider group that went clear with Development Team Sunweb’s Felix Gall keeping an eye on proceedings at the head of the race. The group opened up a healthy three minute advantage over the peloton, only coming back within reach of the bunch in the final five kilometres. With Marc Hirschi and Jarno Mobach left in the first peloton, which had shattered as a result of the climb-littered route, Marc jumped ahead of the bunch over to Felix’s group where he was lead out to take 5th place.
Marc said: “The race was embossed by a big breakaway which made it to the finish, we had Felix up there for us. My legs felt good so at St. Nicolas I went with in a group of six to bridge across to the break. Felix was still there and did a good lead-out for me to take 5th. Overall it was a really hard day but I’m happy with the result.”
“We had a good race today,” said Team Sunweb coach Koen de Haan after the finish. “The plan was to have one guy in front in the breakaway which was Felix; he did a really good job saving energy and could be there in the final for Marc. Jarno was also up there with Marc until the final kilometres where Marc bridged across to the group with Felix and Felix lead Marc out for the sprint.”
