After a day in the breakaway for young German talent Florian Stork it was Joris Nieuwenhuis who finished off the job for Development Team Sunweb, as he sprinted to an impressive 8th place on the first road stage of Tour de l’Ain today.
As soon as the flag dropped on the first road stage of Tour de l’Ain the action was a-go. A volley of attacks were launched but it was a group of five that managed to take a lead over the peloton. Florian Stork represented the team in the leading group, who were given some freedom by the peloton and managed to quickly extend their lead up to four minutes.
The group worked well together and fought to stay away until the last kilometre. As things came back together team’s lined up for the sprint and it was cyclo-cross U23 world champion Joris Nieuwenhuis who took over the reigns for Development Team Sunweb. The 21-year-old launched his sprint to duke it out amongst some of the pelotons strongest sprinters. His efforts earned him a place in the top 10 as he finished the day in 8th place.
After the stage Joris said: “It was a really hectic final with some small and punchy climbs close to the finish. This made a lead-out really tough but I felt pretty good and managed to stay in front to sprint to a nice top 10 place. The team did a really good job today of positioning me in front just before the climbs and going back and to from the car collecting bidons.”
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert said: “It was great to see Florian in the group of the day that were only brought back in the final kilometre. Whilst in the breakaway, he also collected some mountains points which was good. It was a hectic sprint and we lost Nils in the lead-out after a mechanical with 8km to go. Joris was able to continue with the best and take 8th place which we can be pleased with.”
