Max Kanter and Nils Eekhoff finished 3rd and 4th in the sprint to the line at the final stage of the Istrian Spring Trophy today.
Development Team Sunweb took to the start line of the final stage of the Istrian Spring Trophy in Croatia, with a rain-soaked day to close the race. It took 70 kilometres for a breakaway to establish, with three riders opening up a one minute 40 gap over the bunch. Nils Eekhoff flew the flag for Team Sunweb in the breakaway, before dropping back to the bunch to help in the final. A new breakaway of three riders tried their luck as the final approached, but the race eventually came back together for a bunch kick to the line. Development Team Sunweb were well represented in the sprint, with Max Kanter taking 3rd and Nils Eekhoff one place behind in 4th.
After the race Max said: “The last stage was pretty tough. The main goal for today was to protect Marc in the GC and me as a sprinter for the final. From the beginning we were riding in rain and on wet roads. We had Nils who made it into a breakaway, but he took it easy and the group didn’t really work well together so didn’t take much of a lead. Nils came back to the peloton and switched focus to the lead out for me. It was a really hectic final, but we managed to do a good lead out for me; I started my sprint 200 metres before the finish and unfortunately there were two guys who could pass me, but I’m happy with the result and I think that our whole time in Croatia was a good start in the season.”
