Marc Hirschi has made it two for Development Team Sunweb at Istrian Spring Trophy today, as he secured the victory on the race’s second road stage.
Whilst a seven-rider breakaway clipped ahead of the bunch in the early stages of the race, Development Team Sunweb remained tucked in the comforts of the bunch preparing for the intense climb to the finish line.
With 10 kilometres to go just one rider remained out front on the approach to the climb. Solid team work saw the team bring Marc into prime position for the final climb where the team set a high pace and launched what would eventually be the race-winning move, with Marc Hirschi putting his name to the stage two win.
Speaking of the win, Marc said: “Today was was all about the last climb. The team did an amazing job and brought me into a perfect position. As the climb started, I felt like my legs were good, so we set the pace as hard as possible. At one kilometre to go I attacked with one other rider and managed to get a gap over the top of the climb. From there, it was a sprint to the finish. I’m really happy with the win and my shape at this point in the season. I’m also really proud of how the team worked today, without it the win wouldn’t have been possible.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers added: “Before the climb we had Felix and Martin working, with Max sticking with Marc early on in the climb and Jarno and Nils setting the pace to make it really hard as the climb progressed. In the end Marc took great initiative to go and managed to get free from the rest of the bunch. Here he could out-sprint the rider that went with him to take the win. It was a solid effort from everyone today and it’s great to see that rewarded with the win.”
