Day 3 of the Istrian Spring Trophy was a day for the climbers and dubbed the races Queen stage. Development Team Sunweb maintained a good position all day, and opted to spend a relatively quiet day in the peloton whilst a group of three broke free. The breakaway trio stayed away for the duration of the race, only to rejoin the peloton after 122km of racing. On the climb towards the finish a flurry of riders were dropped. This proved no test for Nils Eekhoff as he attacked creating further, decisive splits to the race. The team were in still in a good position at the top of the last climb and were able to deliver Marc Goos to the finish in a fresh condition so he could take 7th place.
After the race, Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert said: “It was once again a solid day from our riders. We were active in the final and worked well together. In the end Marc finished with another good placing. After a long training period and no races I’m happy that he is already showing this level of racing.”
Marc Goos said: “I felt strong again today and the uphill finish suited me well. The team did a perfect job and I am happy with the result. After two years of an injury it feels so good to be back in racing action!”
