Stage 2 of the Istrian Spring Trophy saw riders take on a 186km course with various challenging climbs along the way. The race saw a breakaway of two go clear in the early kilometres. Various attempts to bridge across to the leading duo failed, and their advantage went on to reach 3’20” at its best. Inside the final 20km Nils Eekhoff took a fall and came off the bike, but was quickly returned to the main bunch with the help of team mate Leon Rohde. As average speeds in the peloton on the run towards the finish reached 45kph the breakaway was finally caught. More crashes were seen in the final 10 kilometres but Team Sunweb managed to stay safe and out of trouble. After working to bring Nils back to the bunch Leon was present at the front of the peloton as he brought the race inside its final 5 kilometres. Marc Goos was Team Sunweb’s best placed rider as he crossed the line in 5th place.
“The guys worked well together today and showed some real developments in their riding. Towards the end of the race we were really active and Marc finished in a good position. The finish was slightly different than planned due to roadworks. It was a pretty dangerous downhill finish with traffic islands and a sharp corner which saw crashes come from the peloton, although we remained safe. I’m really happy with the performance of our guys today and look forward to the queen stage tomorrow,” said Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert.
I’m satisfied with how things played out today,” said Marc Goos after the finish. “Everyone worked really well as a team which was great to be a part of. On the last climb I attacked but didn’t manage to get away. I finished in 6th place and I’m happy with the result.”
