With various riders sidelined due to sickness and injury, Team Sunweb physician Anko Boelens provides an update on their recovery.
Nikias was down to line-up at Paris-Roubaix this weekend but unfortunately has a cold. Due to the intense nature of these parcours, we have decided to replace him by fellow German Phil Bauhaus.
After fracturing his collarbone at Tirreno Adriatico, Simon’s recovery has gone well. If all continues to go to plan then it looks like he will be able to return to racing at the Ardennes classics.
Wilco crashed out of Tirreno Adriatico on it’s fifth stage with a fractured collarbone. Initially, the recovery went speedy, but the process has slowed down slightly because of complications. The young Dutchman has some sensory loss in his arm, which looks to be caused by the nerves in his shoulder. His race comeback is now postponed, meaning Fleche Wallonne and Romandie are not possible. His situation is being closely monitored.
Martijn has had a setback in his Pfeiffers disease recovery, which ruled him out of racing last season. After a good period during last winter’s off season and early races he has started to feel more fatigued. We have decided to take no risks and are giving him a good period to take some rest without any pressure on a return to racing to enable him to focus on his recovery.
