Stage four of the Healthy Ageing Tour saw a late breakaway go through to the finish, with Ellen van Dijk taking 10th on the stage.
The day took riders along four laps of a 31.9 kilometre circuit. After numerous breakaway attempts, it was a break of 13 that went clear with Floortje Mackaij representing the team in the lead group. Just as Floortje and her breakaway companions rejoined the bunch, another group of seven attacked. Team Sunweb put in a huge effort at the front of the peloton to chase down the peloton but the leading seven managed to go through to the finish. Ellen van Dijk finished in 10th place, just 7 seconds behind the leader meaning she keeps both the yellow and point jerseys going into the final stage tomorrow.
After the stage Lucinda Brand explained: “We had a really tough day today defending the jersey but the girls were so strong covering all of the attacks. When there was a breakaway we were really in control at the front of the bunch. We’re still in the yellow jersey and with just one day left, we aren’t going to give it away.”
Team Sunweb coach Adriaan Helmantal said: “It was a challenging day, half way through the race a break went clear with some GC contenders represented. Floortje was there to cover the attack but the gap was getting pretty big so we had to chase it down, which the girls did brilliantly. As soon as we had done that a new attack went clear and again they put a huge effort in at the front. It turned out to be a really good day defending the yellow jersey and after some good rest the girls will be back motivated to defend the jersey again tomorrow.”
