A solid ride from the team saw them take third in the team time trial at the second stage of the Healthy Ageing Tour today. Their result means that Ellen van Dijk retains the overall classification lead going into stage 3.
The relatively straight course featured long roads with sharp corners, taking riders along a 19.6km route. At the interim time check the team clocked in at 13’25”, finishing with a time of 24’40”. With respect to the overall classification, Ellen van Dijk picks up an extra 28 seconds to add to her overall time, meaning that she will wear the yellow jersey once again tomorrow.
“We are really pleased with the result from today and we did a really good job riding in this composition for the first time together,” said Ellen after the stage. “This is a discipline that we want to develop as a team and its good to be able to take a lot from today to enable us to progress. We can be proud of how we rode out there and it’s good to keep the leaders jersey for another day.”
Team Sunweb coach Adriaan Helmantel said: “Our result is quite a surprise, we didn’t expect to be so close to the winning time. In coming here one of our goals was to develop our team time trial, with two of our riders quite young. Liane, one of these youngsters, stayed with the team through to the end and Juliette made it through to the last kilometre which is brilliant. We did a lot of things right today, but we also have lots of things to improve on and focus on in the future. Ellen also keeps the yellow jersey which is great.”
