Max Walscheid takes 6th on the Tour of Guangxi’s final stage

The 2017 WorldTour season drew to a close today at the final stage of the Tour of Guangxi. The sixth and final day of action featured a 168 kilometre loop around Guilin, with two categorised climbs before a battle between the fast men of the peloton.

The day opened with a three rider breakaway going clear, extending their lead out to three minutes. As the bunch picked up their pace, the trio were kept within touching distance for some kilometres, eventually caught with four to go. As the catch was made team’s lead-out trains began to form in preparation for the bunch kick to the line. Max Walscheid closed Team Sunweb’s WorldTour season with another solid top 10 result, as he sprinted to 6th place.

Speaking of the final stage Max said: “I ended up being a little bit boxed in on the last corner and couldn’t go full with my sprint. Overall we can be pretty happy with our results here in China. Every day we went for it 100 percent, taking a result four times with me and once with Mike. We always had a plan which we executed in a good way. It was a great team effort throughout the whole week.”

Team Sunweb coach Arthur van Dongen said: “We were in the bunch today while a three rider break was up the road. Max survived the hills and was there when the race came down to a bunch sprint. Every one did their job really well but we were outnumbered and Max became boxed in for his sprint. Nevertheless the guys did a good job today and we can be proud of our determination this week.”
