As the race reaches it’s fourth stage, Team Sunweb’s Michael Matthews is forced to abandon the Tour of Guangxi due to sickness.

Team Sunweb’s physician Anko Boelens said: “Michael began to feel ill after stage three yesterday and his condition worsened overnight. We made the decision to take him out of the race to enable him to fully recover. He will be able to continue normal training within the week.”

Team Sunweb’s coach in Guangxi, Arthur van Dongen commented: “It’s unfortunate that Michael leaves the race but we will continue to work towards our goals. We have a really strong lead-out man in Mike who can take Michael’s place as the last rider with Max, who has already taken 3 top 5 placings. Our line-up still contains a strong team to continue to protect our GC ambitions here in China.”
