After a hard day of breakaways, Development Team Sunweb’s Nils Eekhoff sprinted to 6th place as a break went clear to the line.
Development Team Sunweb lined up at Grand Prix Criquilion today, keen to put into practice all that they had learned from their recent progress meeting at the teams base in Germany. Early in the race, splits formed and Development Team Sunweb were able to place five riders in the leading group. The team rode well, chasing down attacks and marking moves. As the days difficulties began to take their toll, A group of eight riders went clear, with Nils Eekhoff able to follow. The winner came from this group of eight, with Nils sprinting to sixth place at the line.
After the race, Nils said: “We had a really good race with the whole team. It was very good that we were had 5 guys in the first group. With 3 laps to go we unfortunately missed a quite big group but we reacted well and worked together to bring them back. With 2 laps to go we closed the gap and immediately the next group went, I could jump with them which was good. In the last lap I got dropped on a cobble climb but managed to get back to the group. We had a big advantage things slowed down before the sprint. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough power to finish in the top 3 due to the hard race. I’m satisfied with my own and the whole team’s performance of today.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers said: “Today was good, we have a lot of guys in the breakaway which was a good start. As the guys approached the local laps and were on the last climb a group of nine went clear. Nils was able to follow which was a great show from him. The nine went through to the line and Nils took 6th, a good ride from him and the team today with some good development points to take forward.”
