The final stage of the Giro Rosa saw both Floortje Mackaij and Coryn Rivera spend the day in the breakaway’s, followed by Lucinda Brand taking 7th place in the challenging final.
As two riders clipped free from the peloton, it was Team Sunweb’s Floortje Mackaij once again involved in the counter attack. The group of 10 riders surpassed the riders, to form a breakaway in the early stages of the race. As the group of 10 were brought back after 36 kilometres, another breakaway of eight broke free from the peloton’s grasp. This time Team Sunweb were represented by Coryn Rivera at the front of the race, with the group of eight going on to take a two and a half minute lead. Just as it seemed the peloton were happy to give the group some freedom, another 10-rider counter attack came from the bunch which although never succeeding in reaching the front of the race, ultimately led to the end of the day for the breakaway. As the race finished it’s local laps and headed towards the ascent of Monumento Vesuvio a select group of riders went forward to contest the victory. Lucinda Brand continued to chase inside the reduced peloton, to take 7th place at the line. A strong ride from Sabrina Stultiens saw her finish the day in 11th place.
“It was a really tough final,” explain Lucinda Brand after the stage. “After the break was caught the pace was really high and this continued until the final corner before the climb. The team really helped to position me before the climb so that I could be in the first group. The climb was hard from the go and the high pace made the bunch split up. I could follow until 1.5 kilometres to the top and then I didn’t have anything left to follow a final attack. I focused on riding my own race and kept fighting for my place in the GC. I am really content with how it went today, it was a tough stage and I gave it my all.”
