For the second year in a row, Team Sunweb’s Ellen van Dijk has been crowned the European time trial champion after taking the victory in Denmark today.
With the parcours perfectly suited to her strengths van Dijk dominated the 31.5 kilometre course, setting the fastest time at each intermediate check-point. After powerfully navigating her way around the route in challenging weather conditions, van Dijk stormed past her rivals taking the victory by just under one minute, stopping the clock with a time of 40 minutes and 33 seconds.
Also competing in the race was Team Sunweb’s Lucinda Brand. After setting the fastest time at each check-point she crossed the line with a time of 42 minutes and 32 seconds, a time fast enough to earn her a stint in the hot seat. Lucinda finished the day in 4th place, to end a great day for Team Sunweb.
After the win Ellen said: “I’m really happy to keep the jersey for another year. It’s always special to win something like this and I feel proud to wear the jersey. The course suited me well and I felt I had good legs. There were long straights with some small hills and the rain made some of the corners more challenging. Luckily I was going really well so didn’t have to take any risks and managed to get around safe to take the title again.”
Team Sunweb coach Hans Timmermans said: “We knew that these parcours really suited Ellen’s strengths and have put a lot of preparation into the day. Whilst under the pressure of being defending champion, Ellen put in a solid performance and took an incredible time. To win with such a huge time gap is really outstanding and shows she is a worthy winner. It was also a really strong time trial from Lucinda today. Her 4th pace shows that she is in great shape for the road race on Saturday.”
