THE SCIENTISTS AND EXPERTS AT TEAM SUNWEB CONTINUOUSLY WORK TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF IT’S ATHLETES BOTH PHYSICALLY AND THROUGH THE EQUIPMENT USED BY THE TEAM.
The team challenge themselves in every aspect of their elite sports environment, including nutrition, training and equipment. Vigorous and thorough testing of the products used enable them to excel as a team and be the best that they can be. The research of the team’s experts and scientists is based on extensive data analysis. Team Sunweb work alongside its partners DSM and Delft University of Technology using their facilities and wind tunnels to ensure that their equipment, nutrition, race kit and race data analysis are as efficient and effective as possible.
The latest innovations are streamlined along with Team Sunweb’s partners and are closely aligned with the team’s overall performance plan and specific race circumstances. A great and high-end example of one of the developments that Team Sunweb make is their clothing partner Etxeondo, who provide summer and winter clothing for the team’s three racing programs.
“During a race like the Vuelta our riders would have three different jerseys to be used in various racing conditions,” said Tom Davids, Team Sunweb’s R&D expert. “The aero jersey and the skinsuit are used whilst riders are racing at high speed during the sprint stages or the time trials. Both the jersey and the skinsuit are developed to minimise drag when racing at higher speeds.
“The skinsuit has been developed in close corporation with the team. Together with Etxeondo, we did some testing on our Tom Dumoulin mannequin at TU Delft University’s wind tunnel facilities to analyse drag, choose the optimum fabrics and streamline it’s design. Each skinsuit is also tailor-made, so the fit is perfect for each rider, which optimises performance through the reduction of drag.
“Etxeondo’s climber’s jersey is made for racing in high temperatures. Together with Etxeondo we found a lightweight material while maintaining the garment’s close fitting and offers excellent moisture management. For the even hotter days we have the full mesh summer jersey, which again is really lightweight and best used on days when riders have to contend with the demands of hors category climbs.”
