After taking the win in the individual time trial earlier today, Ellen van Dijk finished in 5th place in the afternoons road stage.
The action was a go from the gun in at stage 1b of the Healthy Ageing Tour. The 77km road stage was fast and hectic in its first kilometres, with teams taking the front determined to split the race into pieces. The team were well represented in the first group by Lucinda Brand, Floortje Mackaij, Julia Soek and yellow jersey holder Ellen van Dijk. The leading group held an advantage that averaged around 40 seconds throughout the race, with group two’s efforts to bridge across not to prevail. A solo attack inside the final kilometres left no rider able to follow. Ellen finished 5th in the reduced bunch sprint, and holds onto her overall lead going into tomorrows stage.
“It was a really tough race,” said Liane Lippert after the finish. “We did what we could but it was really hard race.” Juliette Labous added: “Straight away there was a break and we were stuck back in group two. There was no way we could get across, it was really tough and super fast throughout.”
Team Sunweb coach Adriaan Helmental said: “We were in the first group with four riders and things were in control from our side. Going into the final we lost the situation a little bit, but in general we can be happy with how the team worked today and we are still in the lead overall which is great.”
