Coryn Rivera finished in 4th place at todays Drentse Acht van Westerveld for Team Sunweb.
The day was almost all flat, apart from its two climbs of the Vam-berg. The courses narrow roads meant that riders were in a constant fight for position to ride onto to its short corners first. With a little wind blowing, the courses open sections were where the real fireworks were lit and it wasn’t long before the terrain and weather conditions split the race into pieces with Team Sunweb always well represented in the leading groups. A number of breakaway attempts and splits to the front bunch threatened to ruin the sprinters chances, but things came back together just in time for a fast finish. As the race entered its last lap, there were plenty of the team there to position Coryn well for the sprint. After a terrific battle to the line Coryn narrowly missed out on a podium, taking 4th place.
Coryn was pleased with how the team worked together. She said: “We had another great showing as a team today. The girls were super good at keeping me protected from the wind and getting in a good position for the cobbles and the Vam-berg when the wind was right. I’m a little bit disappointed to just miss the podium but again we proved that we are here to race for the win together as a team.”
“When we rode on the Vam-berg we were in a good position, both Lucinda and Coryn made the break which was a good situation for us. Lucinda came back to the car and we talked through what to do. We decided to try to break things up again when the race reached the crosswinds, it worked but only by dropping riders from the back. Then we decided to go for the sprint with Coryn but things didn’t work as well as we had hoped with the lead out and she took 4th. It is still a good result but we will certainly take points of improvement into our next race,” said Team Sunweb coach Hans Timmermans.
