After a fast and furious day out at the Bretagne Classic, Michael Matthews sprinted to 5th place.
Back in action after a rest period after Team Sunweb’s Tour de France success, Michael Matthews and much of the team’s TDF squad lined up at the Bretagne Classic today.
It was 37 kilometres before a breakaway established itself, with seven riders jumping eight minutes ahead of the bunch. Team Sunweb set up office at the head of the peloton keeping the leading group within reach for the majority of the day. At 65 kilometres to go the break’s lead was cut down to one and a half minutes and with the leading group in sight, a group of riders took the opportunity to bridge across to the breakaway.
Riders continued to yoyo between the leading group and the peloton, with its formation and make-up changing by the kilometre. Team Sunweb continued to put in work for the chase, taking turns at the front to reign the leading group in. Various attacks continued to fly ahead but the race eventually came back together for a bunch sprint where Michael Matthews powered through to 5th place.
After the race Michael said: “It was a really tough day today but the guys did a great job. I’m happy with how the day went after a break from racing. The legs are a good sign towards the races that are coming up.”
Team Sunweb coach Luke Roberts said: “The race today over its new parcours was quite tough. It was harder than most had expected and the warm weather made it even tougher. The finale came down to a reduced peloton sprinting for the win. Being his first race back since July, Michael suffered in the final but still managed to take a credible 5th place.”
