Development Team Sunweb’s young German sprinter Max Kanter rounded our a strong showing at the Boucles de la Mayenne with 13th on the final stage bunch sprint to secure his 4th spot overall.

As expected the final stage culminated in a bunch sprint, with Max finishing highest for the team. The stage got underway with a break of five riders pulling clear and for much of the stage the race was controlled and steady, with the gap gradually being pulled back in the second half.

The team were only racing with three riders in this final stage, and Max also had to recover from a crash once the finale kicked off, with around 35km to go, but made his way back to the peloton well before being set up for the finish by his teammates. In the end he suffered from the results of his fall and could only manage 13th on the day.

Team Sunweb coach Sebastien Deckert said after the stage: “Today everything went according the plan until shortly before the local lap where Max crashed. He was riding in the front but came down in an incident on the road. As we knew the local laps were quite difficult, we kept Martin Salmon and Jarno Mobach at the back of the peloton so that they could support Max when he made it back. They did this in a really good way towards the final but he lost a lot of energy and had a lot of pain from the crash.

“Fourth overall is a really good place for us but at the moment we can’t be too happy with it as it was an unnecessary crash for Max.”

Jarno added: “Today we tried to keep Max in the best possible position to defend his GC spot and go for the sprint. Although we were only left with 3 guys we did a quite good job and were all in the front when the final began at the second last climb. Unfortunately, there was a major crash on top of the climb with Max involved, so Martin and I waited for him to bring him to the front again which was really hard as the race was really fast on the local lap. We did everything we could but the circumstances were not with us today to get another good stage result.”
