After a tough day tackling the thirteen climbs on the Brussels Cycling Classic’s parcours, Team Sunweb’s Ramon Sinkeldam finishes the day inside the top 15.
A five-rider breakaway went clear in the early parts of the race but when their lead fell below two minutes, seven riders seized the opportunity to bridge across. The break held onto a lead that hovered around one minute for the final 70 kilometres of the race, forcing the peloton to chase hard behind. Team Sunweb assisted with the chase, with Mike Teunissen and Max Kanter each taking turns at the front of the bunch to bring the leading group back. The final breakaway rider was brought back to the bunch inside the last kilometre and teams went on to battle it out for the sprint. After a chaotic finale, Team Sunweb’s Ramon Sinkeldam finished in 14th place with Mike Teunissen 15th and Bert De Backer 16th.
After the race Phil said: “It was a really hard race and I suffered quite a bit. I haven’t been feeling at my best on the bike over the past few weeks so we switched the plan and decided to go for Ramon. I’m disappointed that we couldn’t position him better for the sprint but we’ll take some positives from today for our next race.”
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “The race turned into a hard race where the bunch had to chase long and hard to catch the break. Our plan was to sprint with Phil but in the final he didn’t feel so good, so we switched to Ramon. The finish was really chaotic so the guys lost each other which was unfortunate because we believed a good result was entirely possible.”
