Team Sunweb’s German talent Phil Bauhaus was once again in contention for the sprint, as he powered through to take another top 10 finish at stage four of BinckBank Tour today.
The fourth stage of the BinckBank Tour took riders along a 154 kilometre loop around Lanaken. Despite various attacks in the early parts of the race the peloton remained bunched for the first intermediate sprint. It was after this point a strong breakaway group of three riders went clear. The trio went on to extend their lead up to three minutes, but were brought back to the bunch with 26 kilometres to go. Teams lined up at the front of the peloton setting the tempo whilst Team Sunweb saved their legs for the sprint. As the break was brought back, a counter attack was launched with two riders going clear. Their lead was short-lived and the duo were quickly swept up by the bunch. A final last ditch attack came inside the final, but as sprinters unleashed their power in the final 500 metres the lone rider was swept up with just 20 metres to go. Team Sunweb’s Phil Bauhaus was up there in the final once again, sprinting to 9th place.
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers said: “The preparations for today were really good. The team stayed with Phil during the day keeping him fresh, and he had lots of riders still with him on the approach to the finale. In the last kilometres the team lost each other but Phil continued to go for it. It was a big fight for him on his own but he managed to take 9th place which is still a good result for the team today.”
