After a dash to the line, Team Sunweb took two top ten placings at stage three of the Amgen Tour of California, with Ramon Sinkeldam taking 8th and Mike Teunissen finishing close behind in 10th.
Stage three of the Amgen Tour of California started in Pismo Beach taking riders along 192.5 kilometres towards Morro Bay. The day was one for the sprinters, providing they could make it up the slight incline in the last two kilometres before the finish. The stage opened with a group of five breaking away almost immediately, with Team Sunweb riding safe in the bunch for the day. After 82 kilometres the team were treated to the days only categorised climb, at two kilometres in length. It was here that the bunch began to eat away at the breakaway’s advantage, after cross-tailwinds had helped edge their gap up to five minutes and 25 seconds. The bridge was made with 8 kilometres left to race and the bunch continued their dash towards a fast finish. As teams began to get organised Team Sunweb moved up fighting for position in preparation for the sprint. In the chase to the line the team were still represented by both Ramon Sinkeldam and Mike Teunissen, who took 8th and 10th respectively.
Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef said: “Today was a flat day, but with a lot of wind. Our goal was to protect Sam and sprint with Ramon. During the day unfortunately Chris had to quit the race because he wasn’t feeling good. In the final all worked out well for the sprint with Ramon and he could sprint to place 8th. Sam came in with the same time as the other GC riders so also that went well.”
