Development Team Sunweb lined up at Antwerpse Havenpjil today for the 168 kilometre route. The team animated the race involved in the breakaways with Martin Salmon finishing the day in 13th place.
The race was punctuated with breakaway attempts and furious chases from the peloton to bring them back. Martin Salmon, Ruben Zepuntke, Felix Gall and Jarno Mobach all had brief stints up the road but their moves were brought to heel. As a break of 17 riders including Martin was brought back, another 18 rider move went clear. Martin was once again involved in the break and having missed the split, Ruben chased in a group of three. After a 15 kilometre effort Ruben and his companions rejoined the peloton whilst the breakaway split up the road. Martin chased behind with his former breakaway companions. The leading group went on to contest the victory and Martin finished the day in 13th place.
After the race Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert said: “The beginning of the race went exactly as we had planned. We had the team covering breaks and marking moves at the front of the bunch. On the local laps a move with Jarno and Martin was brought back and directly after, another group went clear with Martin also present. We would have liked to have had more riders in the leading group but some miscommunication meant that it wasn’t possible. We will take learning points from the day and execute these into our next race.”
