After his queen stage win yesterday, Marc Hirschi cemented his second place overall and took home the young riders’ classification on the final stage of the Tour of Alsace today after finishing in the bunch.
The stage went to the breakaway today, with the early move going in the hills in the first third of the stage – 18 riders pulling clear and building a lead of over four minutes. Despite a big chase from the peloton, bringing the lead back to just one minute with 15km to go, they managed to stay clear to the finish, with the Development Team Sunweb riders coming home in the peloton to secure the podium place and the best young rider jersey.
As well as Marc’s results, Florian Stork also finished fifth overall and the Development Team Sunweb took home the team classification meaning that the whole of the team were celebrating together on the podium at the end of the race.
After the final stage, Team Sunweb coach Koen De Haan said: “It was a large group of 18 that formed the break of the day. Behind, we kept our GC riders safe in the bunch and joined the chase to sprint with Niklas, but in the end the group made it to the finish. With Marc and Florian finishing in the bunch they held their second and fifth places in the GC, and Marc also took the young riders jersey. The team won the team classifiction after a strong week racing as a team together.”
